Top Ten List: Hard Rock and Metal Drummers

Criteria: These are all living, actve drummers, none in Spinal Tap, and I've seen every one of them live onstage. This is why I wear earplugs, kids.

Neal Peart's kit from the R30 tour.

  • Neil Peart--Rush
The Professor, and the greatest of the prog-rock drummers. Fearless, inventive and brilliant with a jazzy style based on Buddy Rich. And he plays a 9-minute solo!

  • Dave Lombardo--Slayer
The greatest thrash drummer. Thank God (or his brother) that he's back in the fearsome foursome.

  • Gavin Harrison--Porcupine Tree
His other gig is with King Crimson. Say no more.

  • Jerry Gaskill--King's X
A powerhouse, he makes his kit shake and also has a great singing voice too.

  • Mikkey Dee--Motörhead
King Diamond's former drummer inherited the 'head drumseat from Philthy Animal Taylor. And he's a beast, too.

Mike Portnoy's mighty drum kit

  • Mike Portnoy--Dream Theater
They don't call it "Drum Theater" for nothing. On his triple-wide kit, Portnoy plays a whole army of instruments, writes songs, and sings backup. And he's an ambassador for his band.

  • Scott Travis--Judas Priest
Responsible for the Priest renaissance on Painkiller, Travis is an ideal fit for Rob Halford's aggressive delivery. He makes the old Priest stuff sound better, too.

  • Charlie Benante--Anthrax
Also a songwriter with great chops. Fast, accdurate and can nail his drum sound down in a day. Now where's Worship Music?

  • Jeff Campitelli--Joe Satriani
Plays Satch's complicated music with fierce joy, he is very underrated.

  • Marten Axenrot--Opeth
The reason Opeth's last two albums are so awesome, he plays with incredible economy and power.
